The Stuff that MattRs

Monday Motivation. Let this be the one where you level up your skills as a leader, or a consigliere. My latest Book Notes are on Richard Hytners classic โ€˜Consiglieri: Leading from the Shadowsโ€™ where he explains how to lead from the shadows, and helps you become a better leader from wherever you sit in the organisation. This is one of my favourite business books, and one that I recommend the most as a way to understand situational leadership in action.

Decisions. How to make great decisions. I was shown two options at work this week, and a very clear decision-making matrix helped me.   This guide from 37 Signals has more great questions to ask yourself when making a key decision.

FriendsThe seven types of friend that everyone needs.  As someone with a relatively small social group, I recognise each of these types, and the role that they play.  Bonus Stuff: Simon Sinek explains how to be better friend, and how to resolve conflict at work.

Finish. Do you ever feel overwhelmed by work?  The Zeigarnik effect is one of the reasons. There are practical steps you can take, including my sure-fire weekly review process.

Visibility. How to become more visible at work.  Some great advice from HBR.  If you need more practical advice on building your brand, I have you covered.

Managers.  Are you stuck in survival mode?  I love this short video explaining some ways out.

Olympics. What would your best olympic sport be?  My obligatory mid Olympics post. Put in your weight and height, and this little site will figure out what kind of athlete youโ€™d be.  Unsurprisingly, it has me down for the hammer, discus or shot putt.

Happy. Eight things that are more important than happiness. #3 and #4 feel like they have become more important to me as Iโ€™ve got older.

Meetings.  Apparently, weโ€™re spending less time in meetings than we used to. Iโ€™m not sure my work calendar believes this fact, but I expect moving to a post pandemic world has made a huge difference.

Connections. Inundation, Addiction and Delusion. All those โ€˜intimateโ€™ friends.  Dunbarโ€™s number is changing, but are all those professional connections useful?  Are they even good for you?

ReadingUse the blank sheet method to get the most out of reading a non-fiction book.  This is similar to how I take book notes.

Finally. Mojie is another excellent daily game. All you need to do is guess the name of three movies, from an emoji description. Super simple, but a lot of fun.

My mammoth 2024 playlist has fantastic tunes added every day. You can follow along here.

๐Ÿ”ˆ Stuff to Listen to...

๐ŸŽง This week, my musical selection is the latest Stuff Mixtape, #27 in the series which brings together all the tunes that have been heavy rotation recently.

From unusual cover versions to dancefloor dynamite. From brand new music from around the world, to some classics you haven't heard for while. Nothing is off limits in my monthly selection.

I highly recommend getting this stuff into your ears.
